Invasive Plant Management Specialist
About This Role:
You're not just removing undesirable plants, you're restoring ecosystems.
As an Invasive Plant Management Specialist at Green Abundance by Design, you'll be on the front lines of transforming suburban landscapes into thriving native habitats. You'll learn to identify, treat, and eliminate invasive species using integrated management techniques that prioritize long-term restoration.
This is fieldwork with purpose. Every invasive plant you remove creates space for native species to return. Every property you treat becomes a little more ecologically beneficial, a little more alive. If you want work where you can see the direct environmental impact of your efforts, this is it.
You'll start by working alongside experienced team members who will teach you the science and the craft. Within 1-2 seasons of strong performance, you can advance to Senior Specialist, leading crews, managing complex restoration projects, and becoming an expert others turn to.
Why We Built This Differently:
Eleven years ago, we founded Green Abundance by Design with a vision: Transition the landscaping industry ethos toward ecological abundance, while providing genuine career sustainability for our team.
Traditional landscaping is built on long hours, seasonal uncertainty, weekend work, and burnout. We refused to accept that as the only model.
We've proven there's another way.
By focusing on specialized ecological services, operating from Abundance rather than scarcity, and charging appropriately for the premium work we deliver, we've built a model that works:
52 weeks of salary while working approximately 45 weeks
8+ weeks paid time off (no unpaid winter layoffs)
40-hour work weeks with no weekend work
Year-round financial stability even though fieldwork is seasonal
Real investment in your development with training, licensing support, and mentorship
We call our operating principles B.A.A.S.E.D. because we believe businesses should be built on something solid:
Balance between meaningful work and a full life outside of it
Accountability at all levels—for results, safety, and integrity
Abundance in how we think, plan, and value our work
Stewardship of land and people
Excellence in craft, science, and execution
Diversity of ecosystems, perspectives, and ideas
Why This Role Matters (for You):
You'll build expertise that's increasingly valuable. Invasive species management is one of the fastest-growing needs in conservation and land management. Within 1-2 seasons of strong performance, you can advance to Senior Specialist, leading crews, managing complex projects independently, and becoming a go-to expert in ecological restoration.
You'll work with intention, not exhaustion. Unlike traditional landscaping's grind culture, we've built something different: 40-hour weeks, 8+ weeks paid time off, no weekend work, and 52 weeks of salary while working only 45 weeks. We prove that you can do meaningful work AND have a life outside of it. That's Balance.
You'll join a team that invests in your growth. We provide at home and on-site training, licensing support, ongoing education, and the tools you need to excel. We believe in Stewardship, not just for landscapes, but for our people.
What You'll Actually Do:
Your days will be spent outdoors, working as part of a small crew traveling to properties throughout MetroWest Massachusetts:
Learn and apply ecological knowledge: Identify dozens of invasive plant species, understand their biology and behavior, recognize native plants that need protection
Execute treatment strategies: Apply herbicides safely and precisely using backpack sprayers and other equipment, following Massachusetts regulations and our safety standards
Perform manual removal: Cut, pull, and clear invasive plants, when appropriate, based on species and site conditions
Monitor and adapt: Track treatment results over time, adjust strategies based on what's working, and contribute observations that improve our methods
Maintain equipment: Ensure all tools and gear are field-ready, safe, and properly maintained
Engage in continuous learning: Participate in training sessions, ask questions, deepen your understanding of restoration ecology
Contribute your ideas: We value Diversity of thought and want your input on improving our processes
Inclement weather projects: On days when weather prevents fieldwork, you'll perform shop work, equipment maintenance, or complete training modules that deepen your knowledge.
What We Need from You:
Genuine interest for ecology, native plants, and environmental restoration (it's what makes the hard days worth it)
Massachusetts Pesticide Applicator License OR commitment to obtaining one with our support during your first season
Valid Massachusetts driver's license with clean driving record and reliable transportation
Physical capability for outdoor work, lifting 50+ lbs repeatedly, staying on your feet all day, working in heat, cold, rain, and difficult terrain
Keen attention to detail and strong safety consciousness, especially when handling herbicides
Accountability and clear communication—show up on time, own your work, speak up when needed
Collaborative mindset and positive team energy
What is Helpful (but not required):
Background in horticulture, environmental science, biology, or related field
Prior landscaping, conservation, or land management experience
Knowledge of New England plant communities and invasive species
Experience using hand tools, power equipment, or small engines
Proactive problem-solving approach
